The Green River intro is a guitar riff that will be a great addition to your repertoire. There are a few techniques – such as slides and doublestops - required to play this intro, as well as some knowledge of scales, so it will be more suited to intermediate or advanced players.

Like so many famous guitar riffs, Green River is based around the E Pentatonic Minor scale, and it also uses plenty of moves and tricks that are standard to blues and rock guitar. However, there are various ways in which you can change the tone and feel to suit your playing style.

This song is based around the key of E, using the E pentatonic minor scale as the basis for the lead sections. For the chords, there are some complicated-sounding Eaug9 shapes, but these won’t be too tricky.

This song can be played in several different ways, with varying degrees of difficulty, but in order to get it to sound like Jimi you will need to comfortable with a few techniques, such as string bending and slurs at the lower end of the fretboard.

This lesson will provide good basic instruction for finger tapping on the guitar. This technique, made famous by Eddie Van Halen, requires fingers on both hands to play notes on the fretboard. What you will need to be focusing on is achieving the right timing between the fingers, but you will also need to have a few scales down – a pentatonic minor scale would be most suitable.

Finger tapping is often played along one string, but it will be well worth adding in more notes from other strings to widen the range of your sound.

This is a legendary Black Sabbath guitar riff that beginners will find relatively easy. One straightforward approach for the Ironman guitar riff is to work off the scale position, which is B minor, but this is not the best way for it to be played. It will be more practical to use a combination of the B minor and B pentatonic minor scales.

What makes Ironman different from other guitar riffs is that it will be playing two notes, the first and fifth note – in a power chord shape – for each position. You can then pick up these shapes along one string.

Pinch harmonics on guitar are by no means easy to master, but it is well worth spending time on this technique as it can bring a whole new dimension to your soloing.

This will require accurate positioning of the pick and the picking finger, as well as a bit of theory knowledge. But if you already know how harmonics work on the the guitar you will just be applying the same principle, although this time using the picking hand to locate the harmonics.

Pinch harmonics on guitar will be easier to pick out when playing at the 5th and 7th frets, so it will be best to start experimenting at these positions first, either on the 3rd (G) or 2nd (B) string.

Fingerstyle guitar can look quite complicated to newcomers, but it is mainly about following patterns. Coordination and patience are the two keys to getting a good technique.

There are plenty of myths concerning the ‘right approach’ for fingerstyle guitar, and some guitar lessons will say you will need long nails in order to pluck the strings properly. But this is not the case; many players will incorporate different styles that will require shorter nails on the picking hand, And if you think of all the different finger-picking styles out there – folk, blues, flamenco, jazz to name a few – you will see it is more important to develop a style that suits the music you want to play.

These ‘With Or Without You’ chords can be played using shapes in the open positions (i.e. using open strings), but they will sound far better further up the neck, using power-chord and barre-chord shapes.

If you have gotten over the basics on the guitar and know a little about power chords and barre chords along the fretboard, these ‘With Or Without You’ chords won’t be too difficult to get down.

Playing harmonics on guitar is all about timing and knowing how to place your finger on the string. There are certain frets that will be easier for playing harmonics than others – the 12th fret for example - and also very important for getting a clean tone is the positioning of your finger, which should be directly over the fret wire.

Once you have successfully played a harmonic at the 12th fret, try it again on the 7th and 5th frets, which will prove a little harder. Playing harmonics on guitar requires plenty of accuracy, but it’s a technique that won’t take too long to master.

The main chord progression for Purple Haze is one of the best examples of Jimi Hendrix’ chord-playing style and it is easy to see why it has become one of the most popular guitar songs around. Although a standard E, G and A progression provides the main structure in Purple Haze, chords that are used in this song are voiced slightly differently, giving that unique Jimi sound.

The names of the chords used in Purple Haze may make a bit intimidating for beginners, but they are relatively easy to play. Timing, on the other hand, will be crucial if you want to get those chords to sound right.

In this video we are going to look at some beginner strumming patterns as well as a few tips and tricks for holding the pick correctly. You will need to know (and be comfortable with) four chords – G major, E minor, C major and D major.

When it comes to strumming patterns, you are going to come across many varations for playing a chord progression, but what you have got to get right first is holding the pick. And there many different picks out there as well, coming in different sizes and thickness, that will have an influence on the technique you use.

Also important to know when you’re working out strumming patterns is how to count beats and play in time, and which strokes will fall on the beat and on the ‘offbeat’.
